Somebody is certain it was 6–4–2. Somebody else is certain the serve had already changed. The rally was four minutes ago, nobody filmed it, and the point goes to whoever sounds most sure.

Meanwhile the match has stopped, and the four of you are having a conversation instead of playing pickleball.

How pickleball scoring works

Pickleball score calls depend on who serves, whether the match uses side-out or rally scoring, and whether you play singles or doubles. Picklematic keeps those moving parts together.

Game targets and margin

Choose a game to 7, 11, 15 or 21 points. A two-point margin is the standard choice; win-by-one is available for shortened or team-play formats.

Side-out scoring

Only the serving side can add a point. Losing a rally moves the serve to the next partner or across the net.

Serving side: Its score is called first and only it can score
Side-out: Serve moves without adding a point

Rally scoring

Every completed rally awards a point, no matter which side served. Each side uses one server before the serve changes.

Every rally: One point is awarded
Score call: Two numbers; no server number

Match length

Picklematic supports one game, best of three and best of five. A match ends as soon as one side has won the required number of games.

How does side-out scoring work?

Only the serving side can score. In doubles, each partner gets a server turn before a side-out, except that the opening serving team starts on second server at 0–0–2. Picklematic tracks the serving side and server number automatically.
